Club Dominicus. This is an Italian run all-inclusive resort catering to overseas flights of...Italians. However everyone is welcome. This is the only hotel anywhere near this beach. Full watersport activities. Excellent food - of course.
LOCAL ATTRACTIONS:
Altos de Chavon. Though this looks like a medieval Mediterranean hillside village - or a fabulous movie set - the village was actually built in the mid 1970s. It is an artist's community with a museum of pre-Columbian artifacts, a 5000 seat amphitheatre (officially initiated by Frank Sinatra) art galleries, restaurants and shops. A stone stairway (a long stairway, very long !) descends from the village to the Chavon River, where short cruises lead out to the mouth of the river and down to the sea.
ACCESS TO BEACH:
One of the DR's National Parks borders Dominicus Beach. There is a parking lot adjacent to the hotel and occasionally an attendant is actually on duty to collect a fee. A short path (wear sandals) leads to the beach.
QUALITY OF BEACH:
Arguably the finest beach in the Dominican Republic and certainly one of the best in all the Caribbean. The main beach is long with deep, golden brown sand. Terrific at sunset. The hotel beach is good, but the undisturbed stretch to the east is sensational. Further along, as the sand narrows, palm trees continue as far as the eye can see.
ADDITIONAL COMMENTS:
This beach is a bit of a drive from the two main airports - Punta Cana (1 3/4 hr.) and Santo Domingo (2 3/4 hr.) - although there are dozens of resorts between the two airports. However, if you are staying at Casa de Campo in La Romana, a half hour away, some American Eagle flights use their private airstrip.
